Laura Loomer, the former congressional candidate with a history of controversial comments, is reportedly looking for a position within former President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign.
The New York Times reported that Trump met with Loomer recently and discussed potential positions for her on his staff.
Loomer would not comment on her private conversations with the former president, saying on Twitter, “Anyone who leaks private and confidential conversations they had with President Trump doesn’t have his best interest in mind.”
Before being reinstated when Elon Musk bought the social media app, Loomer was banned from Twitter after multiple posts about Muslims and Islam, including one where she called the religion “cancer”.
She has been a resolute defender of Trump. In 2020 he congratulated her for winning a primary for Florida’s 21st Congressional District, which includes his Mar-a-Lago residence.
But her potential hiring has already garnered backlash.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a fierce Trump ally, called Loomer a “mentally unstable and documented liar” who “can not be trusted”.
“Never hire or do business with a liar. Liars are toxic and poisonous to everything they touch,” Greene tweeted. “I’ll make sure he knows.”
Loomer continued to post on Twitter defending herself from criticism after the Times’ report was published.
“I’m not done supporting President Trump & exposing his enemies on both sides of the aisle,” Loomer tweeted. “Some people who work for Trump go out of their way to hurt him. Meanwhile, I have always been a loyalist.”
A spokesperson for Trump earlier gave a neutral statement.
“The entire movement is united behind President Trump and his campaign, and it will take everyone rowing in the same direction in order to beat Biden and take our country back,” a spokesperson said.
But as the backlash grew, an official told The Hill that the Trump campaign is not hiring Loomer in any capacity.
