Former President Donald Trump danced around a question on whether he would commit to signing a national 15-week abortion ban if he is reelected as president in 2024.
In an interview with New Hampshire’s WMUR, Trump asked if he would sign a 15-week ban that has been proposed by Senator Lindsay Graham (R-SC) should he be elected president again in 2024.
“Well, we’re going to look at it. We’re looking at a lot of different options. We got it back to the States. We did the Roe v. Wade thing, which they’ve been trying to get it done for 50 years,” Trump said, referring to last year’s major Supreme Court decision to overturn the federal right to abortion.
He mentioned the over 300 “federal judges and three justices” he appointed during his initial term as president, saying he was “able to do things that nobody else was able to”.
When asked again about the 15-week ban on a federal level, he again declined to answer the question directly.
“I think we’ll get it done on some level. It can be on different levels, but we’re going to get it done. I know the issue very well. I think I know the issue better than most and we will get that taken care of.”
Trump Previously Criticized
His question dodging comes after several anti-abortion groups called out his campaign for suggesting the issue should be left to the states.
Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of SBA Pro-Life America, lambasted Trump for his comments.
“Life is a matter of human rights, not states’ rights,” she said. “Saying that the issue should only be decided at the states is an endorsement of abortion up until the moment of birth.”
Former Vice President Mike Pence said Americans “would welcome a minimum national standard” of 15 weeks, while Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently signed a 6-week ban in his state.
Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley said she believes the federal government has a role in abortion limits, but did not get specific during a speech earlier this week.
