Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been in the United States to garner Republican support for Ukraine, which included a dinner with former President Donald Trump.

Johnson was invited by pro-Ukraine think tanks to a private lunch in Texas with top Republican politicians, donors, and industry leaders.

He reportedly wants to be seen as one of Ukraine’s most prominent backers in Europe.

Johnson sought to convince Republicans to “stick with it” and that efforts will “pay off massively in the long run” as some conservatives have started to question the amount of funding and support being given to Ukraine in its fight against Russia.

“You are backing the right horse. Ukraine is going to win. They are going to defeat Putin,” he said.

In the days after the lunch, Johnson met with former US President George W. Bush and Texas Governor Greg Abbott before leaving Texas.

Johnson Meets With Trump

Texas was apparently not the end of Johnson’s journey in the States. After leaving Texas, he met with Trump Thursday evening for dinner, according to the New York Times.

According to a spokesperson for Johnson, the two discussed “the situation in Ukraine and the vital importance of Ukrainian victory.”

Trump has faced questions on where he stands and has said he could solve the conflict between the two countries in just 24 hours if he is reelected. He previously told CNN, “I want everybody to stop dying. They’re dying. Russians and Ukrainians. I want them to stop dying.”

Trump and Johnson had a good relationship at times when Trump was in office.

He has described Johnson as “a friend” and once called him “Britain Trump”, but last month he told GB News that Johnson’s government had swerved “far left”.

Their support for climate policies such as wind farms was one of Trump’s main criticisms.
